There's a lot to be discovered when you begin learning about feng shui, and it can feel complicated and overwhelming to navigate through all of the information.
That’s why I’ve broken it down for you into some basics, so you can start applying these changes…today!
What is Feng Shui and What is its purpose?
The word Feng Shui translates into “wind” and “ water”. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art that has been studied and practiced for over 6000 years.
It uses colors, charms, and furniture placement to shift the energy and life force or “Chi”, in your home to create more balance and harmony, and welcome in an abundance of all the good things life has to offer.
Simple Feng Shui tips you can start today
Clear out the clutter
It doesn’t take a Feng Shui expert to realize that the clutter in your home affects your mood and energy.
Simply walk through your front door. What are you greeted by? 20 pairs of shoes scattered about? Coats? Bills and junk mail?
How does that make you feel?
I know how I feel when I let my house go for a few days. The site of clutter causes me to feel instant anxiety! A heaviness. Like I can’t relax or enjoy my space until I fix it.
Here’s a quick rundown of areas that could use some attention:
Declutter to invite in abundance
Put away shoes (get rid of ones you don’t wear anymore)
Bills, junk mail, magazines (these are not the first things you should be seeing)
50 jackets when you only wear 1
Old torn towels
Clothes on the floor
Junk drawer( you never use 90% of it)
Utensil drawer ( 20 soup ladles! Why?)
Old food/can goods
Organize Refrigerator(keep new fresh food stocked and accessible
Clear junk off top of refrigerator
Keep kitchen/dining room table free of clutter
Get rid of any clothes you haven’t worn in over 3 months(No, you won’t wear it someday)
Clean off the bedside table ( water bottles, books, hair clips…)
Throw away old magazines
Clean under the sofa/sofa cushions
Clear off tables/flat surfaces
Porches and yard:
Out of season decor
Brooms, rakes, garden tools
Bikes, balls, toys
Trash, bottles, boxes, paper
Give your space a good cleaning
Now that you’ve spent time decluttering and creating space, it's time to give
everything a good cleaning.
Start at the top, and work your way down. In other words, ceiling to floor.
Areas to focus on:
Wipe down walls
Over the doorways and windows
Top of the refrigerator
Wash windows ( considered the eyes
of the home in Feng Shui) inside and out
to let sunlight in.
Clean stove and oven inside and out. Be sure to wipe off the burners
Vacuum rugs and sweep and mop floors
Under beds and couch cushions
All flat surfaces ( tables, countertops, tv stands, book shelves)
Clean sinks and toilets ( always pay special attention to bathrooms and the kitchen)
Wipe down doors and door handles
Repair or throw away anything broken:
Everything is energy. Just like you have energy and a life force flowing through you, so does everything that occupies your home.
You want fresh, light, high vibe energy flowing through in order to invite more of that high vibe energy in.
Chipped dishes, vases
Burned out lightbulbs
Scan your space
Look around and take note of what’s left, and how those things make you feel.
If there's anything left that you don't ABSOLUTELY LOVE, get rid of it.
Your space should be filled with ONLY items that bring you happiness, joy,
Everything else is just weighing you down.
Infuse your space with Love and gratitude
Light some candles
Sage your space to remove any negative energy
Open windows and let in fresh air
Bring in fresh plants and flowers
Make your bed
Incorporate feng shui elements
Good Feng Shui is all about creating balance and harmony in your home and your life.
Yin-yang is the balance of dark and light. The balance of feminine and masculine.
The elements that we are about to discuss are, fire, earth, metal, water, and wood.
Each of these elements bring a different energy into your home.
Fire - A power element that represents passion, action, and fame
Incorporate: candles, fire, the color red, and electronics to attract success
Make sure you don’t bring in too much of the fire element without maintaining
Too much of this element can have the occupants of the home feeling anxious,
irritated, and on edge.
Earth - Earth elements are associated with grounding, stability, and security.
Incorporate: Brown and cream colors. Neutrals. Crystals. Pottery and ceramics.
Metal - Element that brings focus and clarity. It can help you in wealth, love,
luck, and health

Choose a calming lake over a tidal wave.
Wood - Symbolizes growth, expansion, new life, health.
Incorporate: Plants, flowers, nature scenes and the color green.
Avoid artificial plants as they represent stagnation.
This is just a brief rundown of how to incorporate the 5 elements to bring in
balance and harmony.
A few other Feng Shui basics…
Front door/ entryway
Make sure you have a clean, clear entryway
Paint your front door a vibrant color
Add plants outside the door and in the entryway
No mirror directly in line with the front door ( abundance will shoot right back out
the way it came in.)
If it’s broken, fix it
Leaky faucets, doors that squeak, holes in clothing, socks without matches, drawers that stick or won’t close.
These are all examples of things that are broken , therefore, you carry brokenness within you.
You are not broken. There is nothing wrong with you.
You are worthy of things that help your life flow smoothly and effortlessly in an ever
expanding direction. Like matching socks for God’s sake!
If it’s open, close it. If it’s out, put it away.
Cupboard doors. The toilet seat( Feng Shui experts like Marie Diamond,
liken it to flushing the prosperity right down the drain, when you flush the
toilet with the lid up.)
Put the cap back on the toothpaste…and put it away.
Make your bed. Put your pajamas away rather than leave them thrown on your bed.
I think you get the picture.
Watch how your life starts flowing in a new positive direction!
Momentum is building…
Keep a clear pathway
All obstacles should be removed to keep a clear path to allow energy to flow.
Keep stairways clear of all items.
Think about it like clearing the energetic blocks in your life. Let things be easy.
Put your bed/desk in the command position
In other words, make sure that your bed and desk are facing the entryway to the
Not in direct alignment with it though.
Bring in plants
Plants bring life to your home.
Place around your home, paying special attention to dark corners and areas where
The energy feels stagnant.
Add a little color

Keep electronics out of the bedroom
They are not good for promoting a restful sleep.
If you are looking to attract-love/partnership into your life, steer
clear of solo images and objects.
Think doubles of everything.
2 chairs in your seating area,
2 nightstands beside your bed,
artwork with couples instead of just 1 of something.
